Hacking the AuDHD Algorithm: Why This Music Is Our Legal Cheat Code


I had to write this eventually, because I’d honestly burst if I kept it to myself.

You know that feeling when you find one specific track, put it on repeat and suddenly… disappear for hours?

You’re working. Thinking. Creating. Completely locked in.

The world around you could be on fire and you’d still be sitting there in your own perfect little Matrix.

This happens to me regularly.

As someone with AuDHD — autism + ADHD — I eventually started asking myself one question:

Why does THIS particular kind of music do something so ridiculous to my brain?

Not all music. Not all techno. Not every random “focus playlist”.

For me, it’s something very specific: slow, glossy dance-pop, nu-disco, deep bass, a steady kick, flowing synths, space and close, intimate vocals.

So I started digging into the research.

And it turns out the idea isn’t nearly as wild as it sounds.

Research into ADHD suggests that additional, controlled auditory stimulation isn’t always a distraction. For some people, it may actually support attention, reduce mind-wandering and help regulate levels of stimulation.

Has science discovered one magical beat for AuDHD?

No.

Has anyone proved that sidechain pumping in a specific track switches on “focus mode”?

Also no.

But when we put together what research tells us about ADHD, autism, rhythm, stimulation, music and the brain’s reward systems, a pretty interesting picture starts to emerge.

1. Four-on-the-floor and deep bass: my anchor

The autistic side of AuDHD can often benefit from predictability.

The real world is full of sounds we don’t control. Someone drops something. A phone rings. A car horn goes off. People are talking nearby. Something beeps. Something hums.

And then the music comes in:

BOOM. BOOM. BOOM. BOOM.

Four-on-the-floor.

The rhythm doesn’t surprise you. You know when the next beat is coming. Your brain doesn’t have to keep guessing what will happen one second from now.

For me, this is where the first layer of the musical “cocoon” begins.

Then comes the deep sub-bass.

Low frequencies aren’t only heard — they can also be physically felt.

I’m not going to tell you that bass “works exactly like a weighted blanket”, because science hasn’t established that.

But as a description of the experience?

Pretty damn close.

Weight. Stability. Grounding.

Almost as if the music is telling my brain:

Relax. The rhythm is here. Hold onto it.

2. Arpeggios, synths and tiny dopamine sweets

And now ADHD enters the room wearing glitter.

Because predictability alone isn’t enough.

If I had ten minutes of nothing but:

BOOM. BOOM. BOOM. BOOM.

…my brain would eventually go: cool, thanks, now let’s check the phone, email, weather, LinkedIn, develop three new business ideas and maybe reorganise the kitchen while we’re at it.

ADHD needs stimulation.

And this is where filtered arpeggios, moving synths, delays, subtle spatial changes, vocoder touches and tiny elements appearing throughout the mix become interesting.

I call them dopamine sweets.

Not because there’s a scientific paper saying:

“Vocoder = dopamine hit in an ADHD brain.”

There isn’t.

What we do know is that ADHD involves differences in reward processing and dopaminergic systems, while music itself engages brain reward pathways. Research also suggests that some people with ADHD may benefit from additional stimulation during certain tasks.

So my hypothesis is much simpler:

instead of searching for stimulation outside the task, my brain is getting enough little changes from inside the music.

Something is happening.

But not too much.

My brain gets a toy.

I get to work.

Deal. 😏

3. Sidechain pumping: my musical stimming

This might be my favourite part.

Sidechain pumping is that characteristic effect where bass, pads or synths gently pull back when the kick hits.

The whole sound begins to breathe.

In. Out.

BOOM — space.

BOOM — space.

Have researchers demonstrated that sidechain pumping is a form of stimming for AuDHD?

No.

That’s my interpretation of my own experience.

But research into music, rhythm and synchronisation does suggest that rhythmic stimulation can interact with attention, arousal and physiological responses.

So “musical stimming” feels surprisingly accurate as a description of what I experience.

Autistic people often use repetitive movement or sensory input as a form of self-regulation.

Here, I’m getting that repetition directly through my headphones.

I don’t even have to create it.

The music does it for me.

4. Slower doesn’t mean boring

And this is where we reach one of the funniest contradictions of AuDHD.

ADHD says:

MORE STIMULATION.

Autism replies:

YEAH, BUT QUIETER, FOR GOD’S SAKE.

🤣

And that might help explain why aggressive music doesn’t always work the same way for me.

It can provide enough stimulation for ADHD while simultaneously pushing me beyond my sensory comfort zone.

For me, the sweet spot often sits somewhere around 100–115 BPM.

That is not a scientifically established “perfect AuDHD tempo”.

There is no magical BPM range that works for everyone.

It’s my range.

Fast enough to give my brain something to hold onto.

Slow enough that my body doesn’t receive the message:

ALARM.

5. Intimate vocals and the sound cocoon

Then there’s the voice.

Not a huge vocal fighting for attention. Not shouting. Not a million words per second.

A close, soft, sometimes almost whispered vocal.

Add wide pads, reverb and space.

And suddenly the music stops being another stimulus inside my environment.

It becomes the environment.

For me, that distinction is huge.

I put my headphones on and instead of trying to ignore conversations, traffic, phones and all the tiny unpredictable noises around me, I create my own controlled sensory space.

I’m not removing stimulation.

I’m replacing random stimulation with stimulation I chose myself.

And I think that may be the heart of my entire “hack”.

The verdict: controlled chaos

After reading the research, I wouldn’t say:

“This music works for AuDHD because scientists proved it.”

That would be far too simple.

I’d say something much more interesting.

I’m beginning to understand why this particular musical structure may work so well for my brain.

I get predictable rhythm without boredom.

Stimulation without sensory attack.

Repetition with constant tiny changes.

Bass, space, movement and detail.

Basically, the exact strange contradiction many people with AuDHD live with:

Give me peace — but please, for the love of God, don’t let me get bored.

And when those two needs land in the right proportions, something happens.

FLOW.

Suddenly the phone isn’t interesting.

The outside world fades.

And I can stay with one thing for hours.

That’s why, for me, this isn’t simply “good music to work to”.

It’s my private legal cheat code.

Not because I’ve discovered some magical brain frequency.

But because I’ve observed my own brain for long enough to notice what kind of chaos helps it find calm.

And maybe that’s one of the most useful things we can learn about AuDHD.

We don’t always need to eliminate the chaos.

Sometimes we just need to find the right kind of chaos.
