Logo Is Just an Image. Why FocusZen® Labs Chose a Word Mark Instead.

Most new businesses begin with a logo.
A graphic designer. A colour palette. A modern font. A polished icon.
These are important parts of visual identity—but they are not the foundation of a brand.
At FocusZen® Labs, we made a different decision.
From day one, we believed our greatest asset would not be an image.
It would be one word.
Why We Chose a Word Mark
The entire FocusZen® ecosystem has been built around a single name.
Today, that name connects projects including:
FocusZen® Life System
FocusZen® Challenge
FocusZen® Kids
FocusZen® Code
FocusZen® Web & Creative Studio
and future projects developed by FocusZen® Labs.
Because of that, we chose to register FocusZen® as a Word Mark with the UK Intellectual Property Office (UK IPO), rather than relying solely on a logo.
What’s the Difference?
A logo protects a specific visual design.
A Word Mark protects the registered name itself for the goods and services covered by the registration.
That means when assessing potential trade mark issues, the analysis is not based solely on colours, fonts or graphic design. It also considers the registered mark, the relevant goods and services, and whether consumers could be confused about the commercial origin of those goods or services.
For us, protecting the foundation of the brand was more important than protecting a single graphic.
Why Does This Matter?
Logos evolve.
Brands refresh their visual identity all the time. Colours change. Fonts change. Designs change.
A brand name is different.
It becomes the identity people search for, remember and associate with your work.
That’s why we chose to protect the name first.
FocusZen® Is More Than a Name
Over time, we’ve been building meaning around the word FocusZen® through:
software and mobile applications,
educational projects,
music,
articles and research,
our website,
children’s educational resources,
digital content,
and the wider FocusZen® Labs ecosystem.
Our goal was never simply to design a logo.
Our goal was to build a recognisable brand around one word.
A Lesson for Entrepreneurs
If you’re building a long-term brand, ask yourself a simple question:
What is your most valuable asset?
Is it a logo that can be redesigned in a single afternoon?
Or is it the name people will search for, remember and trust for years to come?
At FocusZen® Labs, we made our choice from the very beginning.
Logos create visual identity.
Words build brands.
